Wood Deck Contractor Coquitlam
One of the most common materials you'll see for any landscaping project is wood. Wood is used for decks, fences, gates, arbors, pergolas, and even some retaining walls. Wooden decks come with a natural beauty and can seamlessly be incorporated for many different types of landscapes. Through stains, oils, and paint, you can even change the colour of the wood itself. This provides excellent flexibility in terms of the overall design for your property as well. With different types of woods available at your disposal, we'll find the perfect fit for your situation and budget. Coquitlam Deck Builders is well versed in all types of wood decks and has the experience to build any sort of custom deck for you.
Having a deck installed on your property is such a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather that BC has to offer. Whether it's hosting a barbecue with friends of just having your morning cup of coffee on your patio furniture. It's a great addition to any home and can enhance the usability of your yard. If you get a patio cover installed, your deck can also be used year round and you'll have less maintenance work to do as well. A multi-level deck could also be a great way to take advantage of the vertical space on your property if it has some. |

Cedar Decks Coquitlam
When it comes to picking a type of wood, cedar is always a great choice. It has an amazing natural scent and texture with a nice warm color tone to really give it that natural look. Cedar also naturally contains a substance that makes it resistant to insect, rot, and moisture. That means it is quite durable and if the deck is well maintained and installed by a proper deck contractor, your cedar deck should last you for anywhere from 15-20 years (maybe more). Maintenance is important for any structure that is constantly exposed to the elements like your deck. On top of cleaning your deck, resealing it every 2-3 years will help extend its lifespan and help maintain the natural colour. If you have a patio cover installed, there will be less maintenance work involved as your deck won't be as exposed to precipitation and UV rays. Within cedar, there is a tier range and the most common distinctions are clear cedar and knotty cedar. The premium choice is the "clear cedar' and it has very few impurities and does not contain many knots in the wood. The lower cost choice is the knotty cedar which contains more knots and grain variations like the name implies. Cedar decks are a classic choice and is one of our preferred materials when it comes to making a custom deck.

Pressure Treated Wood Decks Coquitlam
If you are interesting in getting a wood deck but looking for a bit more of a budget friendly option, using pressure treated wood could be the solution for you. Out of the deck materials available, pressure treated wood is typically the least expensive. Pressure treated wood is a softwood lumber, commonly pine & fir that is infused with preservatives to give it protection against the outdoors. Preservatives are put into a pressure tank with the wood which forces into the wood, hence where the "pressure" part of the name comes from. The preservative typically has copper in it which is what makes the wood uninhabitable to different types of insects and fungi. This process also makes the wood "harder" and make it a bit more sturdier to everyday wear and tear. Colour options are available as well depending on the type of stain you use. Regular maintenance work is key with pressure treated decks and typically involves more maintenance than your regular cedar deck. When maintained properly, a pressure treated wood deck can last you anywhere from 10-20+ years. The one thing you should consider when getting this type of deck is that it does have the cheapest upfront costs but time and resources spent for maintenance can add up over time which should be taken into consideration.

Hardwood Decks Coquitlam
Another alternative to cedar is a luxury option known as hardwood decking. Hardwood has many types to choose from including IPE. Tigerwood, and Red Balua just to name a few. Harwood usually contain a similar insect and rot resistant substance which makes these woods such a great choice. These woods also come with a very beautiful colour and can really be a statement for your property. As the name implies, hardwood is denser than its softwood counterparts and can take much more of a beating over time. We wouldn't recommend it but it can probably even handle patio furniture being dragged along the surface. Maintenance for hardwood involves oiling it once a year to preserve the wonderful colour of the wood. The upfront costs are usually higher for these decks due to the material costs and some of the extra labor involved for prep and installation. Hardwood decks can last over 25 years with good maintenance and are usually a bit more durable than cedar decks. At the end of the day the type of deck you want will come down to your personal preference.
